Bacterial Biogeochemistry: The Ecophysiology of Mineral Cycling, Fourth Edition discusses the influence of bacterial activity on the chemical environment of the biosphere. Following the success of previous editions, this update focuses on bacterial metabolism and its relevance to the environment, including the decomposition of soil, food chains, nitrogen fixation, assimilation, and reduction of carbon nitrogen and sulfur, and microbial symbiosis. All chapters have been revised and brought up-to-date in light of the many advances and discoveries that have taken place during the last decade. The scope of the new edition has broadened to provide a review of the processes and phenomena that are relevant for global change feedback loops and advances in bacterial biogeochemical cycles.

  • Completely revised to incorporate all recent advances in bacterial biogeochemical cycles
  • Identifies processes and phenomena that are relevant for global change feedback loops
  • Covers interactions between microbial processes, atmospheric composition, and the earth's greenhouse properties

1. Introduction - p. xiii 2. Chapter 1. Bacterial biogeochemistry - p. 1 3. Chapter 2. Transport and motility - p. 47 4. Chapter 3. Degradation of organic polymers and hydrocarbons - p. 63 5. Chapter 4. Comparative overview of the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles - p. 75 6. Chapter 5. Bacterial biogeochemistry in the water column - p. 87 7. Chapter 6. Microbial biogeochemistry in sediments - p. 119 8. Chapter 7. Microbial biogeochemical cycling in soils - p. 153 9. Chapter 8. Microbial biogeochemistry and extreme environments - p. 201 10. Chapter 9. Symbiosis and biogeochemical cycling - p. 237 11. Chapter 10. Microbial biogeochemical cycling and the atmosphere - p. 263 12. Chapter 11. Origin and evolution of biogeochemical cycles - p. 311 13. Chapter 12. Microbial biogeochemistry in the Anthropocene - p. 361 14. Appendix 1. Thermodynamics and energy yields for metabolic processes A predictive framework for microbial biogeochemistry - p. 395 15. Appendix 2. Phylogeny and function in biogeochemical cycles - p. 407 16. Index - p. 421
