Recycling and Deinking of Recovered Paper, Second Edition covers recent advances in recycling technologies. This second edition examines this new process, which is more eco-friendly than the virgin-papermaking process, and which uses less energy and natural resources, produces less solid waste and fewer atmospheric emissions, and helps to preserve natural resources and landfill space. In addition, the most recent information about the recycling of fibers into various grades of paper and board, the control of stickies, and the effects of recycled fiber on paper machines are also covered. Recycling technologies have been improved in recent years due to advances in pulping, flotation deinking, and cleaning/screening, resulting in the quality of paper made from secondary fibers remarkably approaching that of virgin paper.

  • Covers all aspects of recycling technologies in great depth
  • Offers up-to-date authoritative information and cites many mills experiences and pertinent research
  • Examines the use of biotech methods for deinking, refining, improving drainage, and stickies control
  • Includes new case studies on paper recycling

1. 1 Introduction - p. 1 2. 2 Legislation for the use of recycled paper - p. 21 3. 3 Grading, collection systems, and sorting of recovered paper - p. 37 4. 4 Process steps in recycled fiber processing - p. 57 5. 5 System and process design for different paper and board grades - p. 89 6. 6 Effects of recycling on pulp quality - p. 105 7. 7 Chemicals used in deinking and their function - p. 129 8. 8 Deinking with enzymes - p. 147 9. 9 Bleaching of secondary fibers - p. 167 10. Chapter 10 Refining of recycled fibers - p. 195 11. 11 Improvement of drainability of recycled fibers - p. 215 12. 12 Effects of recycled fiber on paper machines - p. 229 13. 13 Control of stickies - p. 245 14. 14 Water reuse, wastewater treatment, and closed cycle operation - p. 271 15. 15 Case studies on paper recycling - p. 293 16. 16 Environmental aspects of recycling - p. 305 17. 17 Uses of recovered paper other than papermaking - p. 323 18. 18 Future of paper recycling - p. 349 19. Index - p. 357
